The Origins of Printed Fabrics
At the end of the 17th century, Europe discovered painted cotton fabrics from India. Their success led to a ban on import and manufacture by Louis XIV. This ban was lifted in 1759, allowing artisans with this know-how to settle in France.
Arrival and Installation in Jouy
Among these artisans was Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, an engraver and printer from Wurtemberg. He partnered and chose Jouy-en-Josas for the quality of its water and its proximity to Paris and Versailles to found a manufacture there.
Oberkampf's Manufacture
Manufacturing began in 1760. Thanks to Oberkampf's ingenuity, the manufacture became the largest in Europe, employing up to 1237 people in 1821. It experienced notable prosperity, especially under the Consulate.
Recognition and Public Role
Oberkampf benefited from the proximity of the Court and received honors. He was decorated with the Légion d'Honneur by Napoleon. The manufacture obtained a gold medal in 1806 of the first class at the exhibition of products of the Louvre industry. Oberkampf was also the first Mayor of Jouy-en-Josas in 1790.
The End of the Company
The company was badly affected by the fall of the Empire. After the death of Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf in 1815, his company eventually closed. This closure marked the life of the village, which became a market town.
